GENERATIONS OF FAITH
Our story through the years.
1869 · A new beginning
On July 25, Black members received letters of dismissal from Moulton Baptist Church, beginning the journey toward a congregation of their own.
1874 · A home on Byler Road
On January 3, deacons King Crayton, George Pruitt, Tandy Crayton, and Ben Warren purchased five acres from John Pruitt for $50. Formerly enslaved people established the Colored Baptist Church here. The congregation was among the early churches of the Muscle Shoals Colored Baptist Association, which supported churches and schools in Black communities.
1898–1933 · Rev. John Harrison Freeman
Rev. Freeman became pastor in 1898 and served for 35 years. Following his death in 1933, the church was renamed in his honor.
1929–1930 · Building for the future
Construction of a new church began in 1929 with donated labor and was completed in 1930. Its cornerstone was placed in 1942.
1968–2008 · A lasting legacy
Rev. Horace N. Snodgrass led the church for 40 years, supporting an educational wing and renovations. His son, Jonathan Snodgrass, succeeded him.
2013 · Continuing the journey
The congregation selected Rev. Timothy L. Perryman as pastor in June 2013.
